The Zoo

Yesterday my uncle asked if I wanted to go to the Denver Zoo.  I wasn’t quite sure because it was a weekday and I didn’t know if my Mom would let me go.  She let me, but there was a catch.  I had to pick ten animals from Southeast Asia, write a little bit about them, and take pictures of the animals. First was the Elephant.  The elephants range from the Southern tip of China and Burma to Sumatra and part of Borneo, as well as part of India and Sri Lanka.img_2559 Next, was the Hooded Pitta.  You can see this beautiful bird in the forests from India to New Guinea.img_2570 After that one we found the colorful White-eared Catbird.  The Catbird lives in the forests of New Guinea.img_2577 Later down the path was the Rhino. The rhinoceros use to be all around Africa and Southeastern Asia, but since 1992 the numbers have gone way down!img_2580 When we came around the reptiles we found the Philippine Sailfin Lizard, and the Green Tree Monitor.  img_2593These animals are found in New Guinea and northern Australia.  We also found the Rat Snake, found in the rain forests of Sulawesi and Selayar, Indonesia.img_2599 Next we found the Mudskipper.  This little guy is found in man grove swamps from East Africa to Australia.  img_2604At the end of our journey we came across the Siamese Crocodile and the Giant Hump-Headed Lizard.  The crocodile can be found in the fresh water of Southeast Asia and in the Indonesian islands, and the lizard in the rain forests of Thailand and through Sumatra.img_2611

We were there for almost four hours with my uncle’s friends and one of them had a whole bunch of kids with her.  My favorite animal out of the whole Zoo would have to be… either the cheetah or the polar bear.  The cheetah because when it looked at me it’s eyes were bright big yellow eyes, or the polar bear because I was sitting right next to a piece of it’s food, and when it came to get the food he/she got super close to the glass.  When we got back I was straight to dance class, the class was horrible, but at least I had a good time at the Zoo.

My Weekend

This weekend was the first in two weeks that I had school on a Monday.  Friday night I went to see Bedtime Stories with Meryl at the dollar theater.  I thought it was funny, but it wasn’t Adam Sandler’s best movie, because it was really cheesy acting.

On Saturday my friend Sierra, her sister, and I all went swimming at the Apex Center for her birthday.  After that, we went to eat at a restaurant called Sushi Hai.  Sierra and I split four rolls; the spider, California, spicy tuna, and caterpillar roll.  It was really good, except the spicy tuna roll,  which was SUPER spicy.  When we were done I was totally stuffed!  We went back to her house and watched Talladega Nights.  Even though I’ve seen it before, it was truly funny.  We chose that specific movie, because earlier Sierra and I were imitating the line “shake and bake” over and over.  While we were watching the movie Sierra’s mom made a cake .  It was very tasty and it hit the spot.

In the morning we made pancakes.  They were good, but one of the pancakes didn’t cook all the way,YUUUKKK!  After breakfast we took her dog for a walk, I enjoyed being outside.  When we got home, we took off for the mall.  Sierra got two more hermit crabs and also got her ears pierced a second time.  I could tell she had a good time, and I did too. When Sierra was getting her ears pierced, I got a charm bracelet with a charm (two more are on their way through the mail).  We went back to their house to pick up my stuff, and then they dropped me off at my house.  I had fun and I’m glad she invited me.

Fried Bananas

img_0657When you hear fried bananas, you probably think,”Yuk, why would anybody like that?!”  Like they say never judge a book by it’s cover, and in this case, don’t judge before you taste.  I thought the same thing, but after tasting them you will definitely be begging for more.  I found this recipe in an Indonesia book that I’m reading.  We might go there, so I thought it would be cool to study.

When I put the banana in my mouth, I had no idea what to expect.  It was crunchy and gooey at the same time.  I slowly chewed while thinking of all the delicious flavors I was tasting.  You have no idea how good they were, it felt like I kept shoving them in my mouth.

In the batter we used flour, water, and salt.  We were suppose to put lime zest in, but we didn’t have a lime, so we used orange zest.  After we took our bananas out of the oil, we sprinkled brown sugar on top, and served them with orange slices and Cool Whip.  When I put mine together, I squeezed some orange on top, and then some Cool Whip.  They were really good, my Mom and I both loved them!  I think that you should go make some yourself!:)  Here’s the recipe from the book!

3/4 cup flour

4 small,ripe bananas

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 to 1 cup of water

1 lime, zested and cut into wedges(we used an orange)

1 cup canola oil for frying

1 tablespoon sugar(we used brown sugar)

  1. In medium bowl, combine flour and salt.
  2. Add enough water to make a smooth batter that is somewhat thick.  Add lime zest and mix well.
  3. Peel bananas and dip them in the batter two or three times, until well coated.  While doing that heat oil to 375 degrees F.
  4. Place bananas in the oil slowly and carefully.  Fry two at a time, spoon and place on paper towels to absorb the oil.
  5. To serve, arrange bananas on a plate and sprinkle with sugar.  Garnish with lime wedges.
